A masterclass of comedy and pathos
Michael John Ciszewski is a New York Comedian who in an attempt to make his mother proud of him attempts to canonise his mother as a saint in one hour.
Micheal rings the Vatican direct and then goes through the steps to cannonisation, justifying and explaining how his mother meets each criteria and the miracles she performs during her life.
Set in the perfect setting of an actual decommissioned church, what follows is a masterclass of comedy and pathos, with sentiment, love, and tragedy in spades.
We learn about his mother through his childhood living in New York City within sight of the twin towers and his mother a registered nurse working with HIV patients.
Michael holds the audience in the palm of his hand as he takes us through among other things 9/11, the aftermath, the AIDS epidemic, his mother's support for his sexuality, his comedy career.
I absolutely loved this show; I laughed throughout and also not afraid to admit had a tear in my eye on more than one occasion.
Michael is a skilled comedian and actor, it's a tightly written script, but I always felt in the moment and spontaneous. His openness and genuine love for his mother shone through.
The show we saw was only half full; this show should be sold out every day. If you are looking for the perfect afternoon show, this should be at the top of your list.
