Review of Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales: Together Again, Again!

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

We were taken 45 years into the future, to a time when reptilian overlords rule the earth, the sun has exploded (but it was great for those Insta posts!) and it's been a long time since Jinkx won the 5th season of Ru Paul's Drag Race. With a failed career as a TV starlet behind her, and Major Scales having slipped into musical obscurity, this show is to be their swan song in Together Again...Again.

Desperate for the limelight once again, Jinkx is ruthless in her domination of the stage and attention, whilst Major Scales acts as a foil to her acerbic humour and jibes. There is a lot of ad libbing, and I pitted the poor soul who was rash enough to leave his seat during the performance.

Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are the alter egos of Jerick Hofer and Richard Andriessen. You don’t need to have seen Drag Race to get the jokes, which is just as well in my case! My companion is a huge fan of the show, and absolutely loved the section on whatever happened to... where photos of the aged drag queens were shown together with a short description of their deaths.

The real surprise for me was Jinkx's amazing voice, both when singing their own compositions, and when covering other composers works. There were two stand-outs for me, one was an altered of "Hello Dolly" to be "Hello Jinkx", and the second was when Jinkx gave a superb version of a not often performed Sondheim classic called, “I Never Do Anything Twice”, which Monsoon sings beautifully and resists the temptation to overdo the innuendo.

It was a really fun show, with great comic acting, wonderful songs, and overall a really happy atmosphere. If you're feeling in need of an uplifting evening - this will hit the spot.
