On Monday, March 10, 2025, the Vaudeville Theatre played host to Lee Mead's latest show, "The Best of Me," marking the inaugural performance of the Westway Sessions—a series spotlighting leading stars from the West End and Broadway. Mead, renowned for his charismatic presence and vocal prowess, delivered a performance that was both intimate and invigorating, earning a well-deserved four-star rating from us at London Born and Bred.

The evening commenced with Mead reflecting on his illustrious career, sharing anecdotes that provided a heartfelt narrative to his musical journey. From his breakthrough role in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," where he captivated audiences with "Any Dream Will Do," to his stints in productions like "Chicago" and "We Will Rock You," Mead's storytelling offered fans a nostalgic trip through his theatrical endeavors.

Musically, the setlist was a thoughtfully curated blend of musical theatre classics and contemporary hits. Highlights included a stirring rendition of "Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera" and a soulful cover of "Englishman in New York." (although he sang 'New' with a Brooklyn twang which jarred a little) Mead also showcased tracks from his 2023 EP, "The Best of Me," with "The Power of Love" and "Let The River Flow" resonating deeply with the audience.

A standout moment of the concert was the guest appearance by Brenda Edwards. Her dynamic performance added an electrifying energy to the evening, and her duet with Mead was a masterclass in vocal harmony and stage chemistry. Edwards' contribution elevated the concert, leaving an indelible impression on all in attendance.

The Vaudeville Theatre, with its intimate ambiance, provided the perfect setting for this concert, allowing for a genuine connection between Mead and his audience. The acoustics and lighting design complemented the performance, enhancing the overall experience without overshadowing the performers.

Credit should also be given to the band who turned their hands from the Rolling Stones, to Sting, and George Michael songs as well as the musical numbers. The brass player, who played clarinet, flute and saxophone was very talented.

Looking ahead, the Westway Sessions continue with an exciting lineup:

  • Cassidy Janson: April 7, 2025

  • Kerry Ellis: April 21, 2025

  • Aimie Atkinson: June 23, 2025

Each promises to bring their unique flair to the Vaudeville stage, making the Westway Sessions a must-see series for musical theatre enthusiasts.

In conclusion, Lee Mead's "The Best of Me" was a testament to his enduring talent and ability to connect with audiences. The combination of personal storytelling, diverse musical selections, and stellar guest performances made for a memorable evening that set a high standard for the concerts to follow. He will also be touring with his show.
