Zog at Cadogan Hall Review - A Roaring Soaring Success

A review of Zog by Simon Darnley and Reuben 2 years and 5 months
Zog is a young dragon who can't be a proper dragon until he learns to fly, roar, and breathe fire. Based on the much-beloved book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, this musical adaptation is an absolute roaring, soaring success, and I can't recommend it enough for children and dragons everywhere.
We follow Zog through dragon school where he longs to get a gold star for his efforts. Meanwhile we meet Princess Pearl who decides she does not want to be a traditional Princess but rather spend her life caring for people and wants to be a doctor. The two meet and embark on high jinks and adventures to the inevitable happy ending.
The cast are all enthusiastic and super talented, acting, singing, dancing as well as managing their puppets that were recognisable from the original drawings by Axel Schffler.
The songs penned by Joe Stilgoe are catchy, clever, memorable, and perfect for this young crowd. “Practice Practice Practice” and “Golden Star’ particularly had everyone clapping and singing along.
The simple but effective staging and costumes used primary colours as well as some clever touches like different umbrellas to show the passage of time, for example leaves for Autumn, snow for winter and bright flowers for Spring.
The whole show was 60 minutes without a break, and the audience was rapt and engaged throughout and keep the energy high throughout, laughing at the many poo, fart jokes as well as plenty of slapstick.
This was my grandson's Reuben first foray into any theatre, and we were slightly concerned if at the age of 2 and a half he would understand and be able to concentrate for the whole show. We need not worry at all, he laughed, clapped, sang and roared along with everyone else. When it finished he just said “more!!”
Reuben would also like it noted that it was funny when Zog breathed out snow.
If you want to start off your children with a love of theatre and musicals, Zog is definitely the gateway drug!
Zog is playing Cadogan Hall until 23rd August.
