A perfect introduction to theatre for very young people.

As part of the Camden Fringe “To Mars” is aimed at children 6+ and can be enjoyed by the whole family. We meet Maddy (11) who has been denied her dream job of working at NASA due to her age. Nothing will stop her dream, not even her slightly annoying little brother Jack. Maddy decides to invent space boots and then her and Jack fly to Mars on the adventure of a lifetime.

They find an amusing alien called Zom along with his adorable little robot “Rusty”.  Zom is quick to point out that Maddy and Jack are actually the aliens on Mars and recruit the siblings to fight the rovers that are threatening life on Mars.

We see how the brother and sister relationship is strained, each wanting different things and how they manage to pull together to return home in time for pudding.

To Mars is the first production of Mini Moon Theatre, a new children’s theatre company formed by recent graduates of Wimbledon College of Arts and they should be very proud of it!

Written and skillfully directed by Megan Holman, delightful costumes and sound by Johanna Baldurs and puppets and props by Fionnuala O’Gorman. It looked and sounded fabulous with clever use of colorful adaptable scenery, sound, well-made puppets, alien make up and a functioning robot to boot! The actors Erin Nash, Lexi Quintana and Will Harrison fully commit to their roles in an engaging fun way with high enthusiasm and passion.

The children in the audience clearly enjoyed and laughed along. Juno (10 and fifth) particularly liked Zom and the noises Rusty the Robot made. Blake (8) was memorised but wanted to see more of the puppets.

At the end there was a free activity pack that goes along with the show including questions for children and their carers to work through together, as well as other activities such as creative writing and word searches!

At only 40 minutes this is a short and fantastic gateway for children to the theatre. It's a well-paced, sweet and engaging tale with the right amount of jeopardy and emotion that anyone with brothers or sisters can relate to.

I would fully recommend this to a young audience and will be recommending it to all the parents out there.
